Laptop Battery Confusion

A: Hi there i am about to purchase a new hp laptop battery for my HP laptop but the guy i purchased it from on trademe said i am supposed to charge it before i use it but on some articles on the internet it says i am supposed to discharge it and then charge it right up first

What am i meant to do with my new battery?

Is it an official HP battery or a "Battery for an HP Laptop" that could be made out of anything?

If the latter, then I recommend not buying it! Those things last about 10 minutes, leak, explode and generally aren't worth much. Of course, they're about 10 times cheaper than an official battery.
