Volt Battery May Be Poised for Success

Despite a compressed, three-year window to develop and test the lithium-ion battery pack for Chevy's new Volt electric vehicle, experts say there's a good chance the technology will prove to be durable and dependable when it hits the streets later this year.

"We don't know definitively what the failure mechanisms will be for this laptop battery," says David Swan, CEO and founder of DHS Engineering and a well-known expert in electric vehicle testing. "But chances are that General Motors will be right. They can't afford to fail."

Indeed, GM's reputation is on the line with the Volt. Said to be the biggest program in the company's 102-year history, the Volt serves as an opportunity for GM to make up for the media-generated black eye it received after the infamous shelving of its earlier electric vehicle, the EV1. It also gives the company a chance to take the lead in the hottest new area of the automotive industry.

That's why GM stepped boldly forth in July of this year, announcing that it will offer an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the Volt's lithium-ion camcorder battery pack.

"We offered that warranty because our confidence (in the camera battery) has increased significantly," says Rob Peterson, a spokesman for GM. "What our engineers accomplished over a short period of time - when you take into account the laptop batteries, suppliers, electronic controls, manufacturing and dealer training - is really impressive."

Navigating Parallel Paths

For engineers, the Volt program has also been a genuine stomach churner. When General Motors announced the program schedule for its Chevy Volt electric vehicle early in 2007, the timing appeared to be next to impossible. In a scant three-and-a-half years, the technical staff faced the prospect of studying a new material, building prototypes, working with suppliers, understanding failure modes and then squeezing years of simulated life into a few months of camcorder batteries testing - all while the car itself was still being constructed.

"In the past, innovation and invention was done before the technology was assigned to a vehicle," Peterson says. "This was different. Here, we decided to do the innovation and invention on a parallel path with the vehicle development."

From an engineering perspective, the short development time raised questions, particularly where the Dell x200 battery was concerned. Some wondered if two years of testing on the Volt battery would provide an accurate snapshot of its capabilities under real-world conditions. "The danger with a new technology is that maybe you're testing it the old way - the way that mattered for previous generations of products," says Steven Eppinger, a professor of management science and innovation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Surprisingly, experts say that the compressed test period isn't a big issue. The vast majority of engineered products are subjected to accelerated life tests. "In most products, the kind of (testing) cycle you want to put it through can be accelerated," Eppinger says. "Sound power can be used for various novel applications including mobile phone battery that can be charged during conversations and sound-insulating walls near highways that generate electricity from the sound of passing vehicles," the co-authors added.
Harvesting energy from phone calls and passing cars is based on materials known as piezoelectrics. When bent, a piezoelectric material turns that mechanical energy into electricity.
Lots of materials are piezoelectric: cane sugar, quartz and even dried bone creates an electrical charge when stressed. For decades, scientists have pumped electricity into piezoelectric materials for use in environmental sensors, speakers and other devices.
Over the last few years, however, scientists have made dramatic advances in getting electricity out of piezoelectric devices. Most of these devices, which are not yet available for consumer purchase, would generate power as a person walks, runs or, in this case, talks. The U.S. Army is even looking at partially powering some vehicles by channeling the physical impact of a bullet into a small electrical current.
The Korean scientists, however, want to harness a different kind of power source: sound waves.
Using zinc oxide, the main ingredient in calamine lotion, Young Jun Park, Sang-Woo Kim and their colleagues created a field of nanowires sandwiched between two electrodes. The researchers blasted that sandwich with sound waves, which at 100 decibels were not quite as loud as a rock concert. A normal conversation is about 60-70 decibels.
The sound waves produced a mild electrical current of about 50 millivolts. The average cell phone requires a few volts to operate, several times the power this technology can currently produce.
The new research is interesting, said Michael McAlpine, a scientist at Princeton University who also buildsenergy harvesting devices.
"But the real question though is whether there is enough ambient noise to act as a power source as for a cell phone," said McAlpine. A consumer probably wouldn't want to attend a rock concert or stand next to a passing train to charge their cell phone.
The Korean scientists agree: 50 millivolts is not a lot of power, but they also say their research is proof of concept. As they continue their work, they expect to get a higher power output.

Hurley says the Army is considering moving them over for military applications, since all that fancy gear a modern soldier carries has to be powered by something.

Even more impressive is the development of Lithium Air technology. In those, the battery’s lithium anode is electrochemically coupled to atmospheric oxygen through an air cathode. Because atmospheric oxygen is unlimited (on Earth, anyway) the capacity of the battery is only limited by the lithium anode. If that technology can be perfected, batteries could be reduced to a quarter of their current size or even smaller, at the same time improving their charge capacity tenfold or more from today. The applications are endless, from tiny electronics that seem to run forever to electric cars that are safer and lighter than anything on the road today, and which only need occasional recharges.

Apparently I’m not the only one who didn’t know that some of these technologies are already here. An Army memo states that lighter, better batteries than those out in the field are available and sitting in U.S. inventory right now. Commanders aren’t requisitioning them simply because they don’t know they can.

So don’t discount the humble battery. Big changes could be on the horizon for our hard-working electrical heroes, and much new discovery seems to be taking place every day. And you don’t even have to wait for the lights to go out to consider them.

Breaking world record on a charger by using lithium-ion batteries

As global auto manufacturers struggle to develop an electric vehicle (EV) battery, Sanyo Electric Vehicles, An electric vehicle powered by lithium-ion batteries broke its own previous Guiness world record for the longest Electric Vehicles trip without recharging when it completed a 623.76 mile

The Daihatsu Mira Electric Vehicles, featuring Sanyo lithium-ion batteries and converted from gas to electric by the Japan Electric Vehicles Club, already set a record for the longest single trip without recharging when it took a 345-mile journey from Tokyo to Osaka in November 2009.

What is more remarkable is that these enthusiasts from the Japan Electric Vehicle Club (Japan EV Club) used 8,320 cylindrical lithium-ion laptop batteries to run the Mira EV for 1,003.84km for almost 28 hours at an average speed of around 40km/h on a single charge.
